How to Prepare for College Visits
College visits are one of the most important part of the college admissions process and can’t be replaced with Instagram photos or Google Images. Visiting a college campus is what really helps a student decide if it’s the right fit. The numbers might line up and the brochure looks like the place for your student, but seeing the campus in person and the students bustling to class is the best way to cross schools off your student’s list or move them to the top. Here are a few ways to best prepare for upcoming college visits.
Know What to Expect
Campus visits often include a 30-45 minute admissions presentation followed by a 75-90 minute walking tour. Some smaller schools might have an admissions counselor do the presentation with just your family rather than a whole group. The walking tour is usually led by a student tour guide, giving you an inside look at their college experience. Prepare to walk a few miles all over campus and check the weather for the day of your tour. Bring a pen and paper if you plan to take notes during the presentation portion.
Schedule Your Visit
Did you know campus visits fill up, and the admissions office may not be able to accommodate you? How frustrating to travel all that way and realize you never signed up! Busy tour days are often Mondays and Fridays (think long weekend) but don’t assume a middle of the week day is available. Always register ahead of time with the correct number of guests and plan your travel around your tour reservation.
Charge Your Technology
We rely on technology so much these days... so be sure everything is charged! You might use your phone for maps and GPS, taking notes, taking photos, and probably making phone calls (in case you get lost on the way to your tour!). Make sure your phone or whatever other technology you use is charged up and ready for a whole day of use!
Be Ready to Talk
Students don’t need to be extroverted - they should be themselves - but they should be ready to chat with admissions staff and perhaps introduce themselves to a room full of people. They want to get to know your student, so ensure they are prepared to talk about themselves and why they are excited to be on XYZ campus!

Campus visits are a ton of fun for the whole family, and it’s exciting to see your child’s demeanor change on certain campuses. Don’t forget to have a solidified college list before your tours, which your counselor can help you with, to be sure you’re making the most of your time.
