The Common App is Live: Now What?
It’s officially August 4, which means the Common Application has been live for three whole days. But no rush; while it’s good to be organized and apply early, do not feel like you need to submit your common app on August 2. There is time!
Take a look at my top suggestions for what to do now that the common application is live.
Open an Account
I know… this sounds obvious. But maybe you aren’t familiar with the process and that’s okay! The common application (and any other application you decide on, like the Coalition App or individual colleges) will require you to create an account so they know who you are! This is a super simple step and gets you moving in the right direction.
Actually Research the Schools You’re Applying To
Again, this might be obvious. But if you haven’t already, I mean more than just, “The University of Chicago is in Chicago and it’s a good fit for me because it will challenge me.” Nope. Do your due diligence to fully research and understand those nitty gritty details of each school, and let that come through in your application. And then be sure not to confuse the details with another school!
Organize Your Essays
Between the common app personal statement and the supplemental essays, you might find yourself writing quite a few essays depending on how many schools you’re applying to. Don’t let this discourage you! There are so many resources out there to help you with writing your essays and keep track of everything in a way that makes sense to you. You might also be applying to schools that aren’t on the common app, so it’s important to know the deadlines in addition to the various prompts.
(Plus - I’m doing a few college essay workshops soon! If you’re in Arizona and want additional support, send me a message for more information.)
Compile Any Miscellaneous Information
This can include a copy of your high school transcript, a resume, your list of activities, test scores, and information about your family. These are all things you can compile later, but it makes sense to do it early if you can!
Take Your Time
I mean this in two different ways: take your time and pay attention to detail, and relaaaaax. Honestly, there is no rush in submitting your common app, or other applications, as fast as you can. There are certain deadlines you need to keep track of (early decision, early action, etc.) but if you get organized and start early, there is no reason for you to feel rushed. Look over your application, have someone else look over your application, and ensure all of the information is accurate and true to you. Furthermore, take time for yourself and don’t stress out about this part. You’ve put in the work, and the hard part is finished! Once you hit that submit button, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Seniors - you are SO CLOSE. There are only a few more steps before you’ve done all that you can do, and you’re right on track.
